Help Please On Acess No Charges
Feb 14th, 2007 at 3:04pm

Hi

I have used Dialwise.co.uk to phone Spain but cannot seem to work out if BT are charging me a connection fee on top of the relevant 0844 call charge.  I am sure I could find this info here somewhere, but I am also sure someone very quickly be able to help.

Regards

Darryl

The relevant page on the BT Price List is here.

The answer is yes, you are charged the 3p call set-up fee on calls to 0844 numbers that are charged pence per minute. As it's a dial-through service you will also be charged from the point that the 0844 number answers, which is before you put the final destination number in. So a call where the final number does not answer is still chargeable.

I don't know how often these kind of companies change rates but I've been using this one on www.dialwise.co.uk since Jul 06.  Since you are around do you know the best overall deal for a preson that is unable to to remember to hang up after 60/90 mins of a call.  I think Sky only charge 0.8p for extra time, but that's not an option for the person concerned.  I have suggested an egg timer and more seriously I think a cordless telephone that has an adjustable timer with a 5 minute warning alarm would be a marketable product.  As soon as you pick up the phone (nice if it knew that you were making the call rather than recieving the call) the time was activated.  The tech involved must be so simple I just don't understand why the product does not exist.  Intrestingly the patent does.

I assume you're talking about UK to UK calls (01 or 02 numbers).

If so, I'd not bother with a free E&W or 'free' 24/7 calls package provider but would opt for using 1899, 18185 or 18866 - 5p connection and talk as long as you like.  I'd suggest a fit-program-and-forget Orchid V2 LCR dialler to automatically insert the 18185 code for every outgoing call.

Problem there is if the person concerned has more than a single phone socket in use - they'd need a V2  for each.
