Non Geo Number Racket

Nice long article about it  in the Times.

See:  http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/money/consumer_affairs/article146...

" LLoyds TSB says that customers who do not want to dial the 0845 number, should, er, call the 0845 number to ask for a national number." Huh

Interesting article.

We could always post a comment to the article as the new Times format allows one to do.

Thanks for spotting that.

I've posted a comment about certain things like costs from mobiles, the fact Sky, BA, Argos, CPW/TalkTalk, etc all use these numbers to earn revenue.  I also mentioned some schools have started using these numbers as well as surgeries now.

I also mentioned the e-petition and posted the link.

However, it hasn't appeared yet so not sure how long it takes to appear.  It may also be because I used my forum name but will wait to see if it shows and then post again if needed.

Can't see your reply yet bbb_uk, could the reason be that you dare to mention Sky, in your comment.

Derick from Preston has got his facts wrong, he quotes

" Call an 0870 number during the day from a BT landline and you will pay 3p a minute"

Unfortunately, that's the sort of thing the general public believes.

And the beat scam goes on.

No I did not, if you read it properly I told them they had got it wrong in their 10th paragraph,  the quote you use is the one I took from their 10th paragraph

This is the actual wording:-

The following, from your story above,(10th paragraph), is untrue, "To complicate the matter further, the amount that you pay depends on which telephone company you use. Call an 0870 number during the day from a BT landline and you will pay 3p a minute."
You have got it right further up, as the cost is 7p a minute, the other telcos in same paragraph are also wrong as they also cost more. Virgin charge 10p a minute.

The part I have highlighted is their statement not mine, I then use another quote of theirs where they got it right!:-

Dial a number beginning with 0870 and you will pay 7p a minute during the day, about 3p in the evenings and 2p at weekends.

Obviously they're are specifically choosing which posts to accept and which not to.

I did originally try with my forum name and yesterday I re-submitted it with my actual name but again to no avail.  I tried this morning and removed the e-petition paragraph because it had an webaddress in it thinking that they didn't like webaddresses in posts.  During my three attempts, I used a valid webmail address and I have checked this and not received a thing from them (not even in my junk mail folder).

Below is the last thing that I sent them:
Quote:
Some schools are also using numbers beginning 0844 now as well.

VirginMedia (NTL:Telewest) now charge upto max 10p/min for 0870 and upto max 5p/min for 0845 calls.  This makes them the MOST expensive landline provider for these calls.

Rates from mobiles can vary a lot.  The article states 15p/min from Vodafone but for some tariffs it can be as high as 35p/min.

T-mobile charge upto 40p/min for calls to 08x numbers.

In most cases your telephone provider tries to hide the cost of these calls as well - eg BT - which is contrary to Ofcom regulation.

Most Government authorities and some Police forces have started using 08x numbers and may also receive a "rebate" as well (eg Derbyshire receive a "rebate" of somekind).  The DVLA/VOSA makes money from the calls.

Big companies like Sky, CPW/TalkTalk, BT, BA, Argos use these higher-priced numbers to earn revenue.

Nothing I mentioned was a lie at all.

bbb-uk, I have submitted your message under a different name using one of my email addresses,(I added the doctors surgeries on 0844 at 5ppm),, so lets see if they allow it now!

Have you noticed the last message from:- Matt Newing, Merseyside,  he sounds like he works for a telco or 084/087 seller as he is praising these numbers.
