Sheer effrontery!
Mar 14th, 2007 at 4:17pm

My prize for the cheekiest scam of the week goes to Homebase. Two years ago I was stupid enough to accept a credit card from a pleasant and helpful salesperson simply to win them some commission. I cut it in half and returned it to Homebase. Recently I received change of credit terms notice from Homebase and when I informed them in writing that the card had been returned unused and telling them I wanted my details removed from their lists, they said they could "not close the account due to Data Protection without a request from you". Of course I could ring them on 0870 etc. to discuss the matter.
My next letter was (another) formal instruction to close the account. Back came the response that they could "not close the account due to Data Protection without a request from you. We have a different name on the above account ..." Of course, again I could ring them on 0870 etc.
These Kafkaesque exchanges went on until I demanded under the Data Protection Act 1998 full details of any credit or other agreement in my name, and pointing out that I did not dial revenue sharing numbers which most reputable companies had already ceased to use.
This morning I received a letter thanking me for my request to close my Homebase Card account and asking why I had taken this decision. One Stephen Brown would be very grateful if I would call him on 0870 etc. and let him know my reasons.
Is it any wonder that Homebase stores have the smell of death about them? Give me B & Q's helpful staff and well-stocked shelves anytime.

FYI the Homebase credit card is operated by MBNA Europe.  If you go to Home >> Search to find an alternative number and type in MBNA quite a few geographic and even freephone numbers come up.
