What was the 'old' number? Is this the general switchboard number?

A Google shows loads of 01823 355xxx and 01823 356xxx numbers for council offices. Is this correct? I presume you are local, so look in your Phone Book, there will probably be loads of entries for the County Council.

Hi, the old no. was 01823355455.  No, I'm not local, far from it!

I can't think of any (straightforward) way of finding the alternative because it has never been published.

It has probably been moved to another 01823 number(s) they have. That looks like there are at least 2000 possible DDI numbers!

I would be suprised if it were to be a memorable number like 355555 or 355655 etc because it is not given out to callers.

You could ask the council. The page for compliments and complaints is here, and at the bottom it gives:

Information

If you want help or advice about using this procedure, please contact:

Liz Payne-Ahmadi
Group Manager - Customer Access and Equalities Team
Chief Executive’s Office
Somerset County Council,
County Hall
TAUNTON,
Somerset
TA1 4DY

Telephone: 01823 355400
Fax: 01823 355529

Call them and see if they will give you the 01823 number, or alternatively, we could list it as the alternative on this site, and they will get loads of calls. Grin

Numbers beginning 0845 345 are allocated to Opal Telecom, a part of Carphone Warehouse. Assuming that they have not been ported away from Opal, then the council has been sold by promoting them as 'LocalCall' numbers. See Opal's site here. Therefore, they may be under the false impression that they are doing you a favour by giving you a 'local' number.

Now this could be the start of a beautiful friendship!  I work in Market Research and will post as many alternative numbers as I find during my work, on your site.  It appears that apart from direct lines, there is no main switchboard no.  The contact I found has permanent VM that advises not to leave a message!! Thumbs down to Somerset Council.  I say post the Chief Exec's no.  Grin
