another scam
Jun 13th, 2007 at 7:15am

yesterday I phoned an 0800# for barclaycard.  I was then transfered to the correct dept.  At the end of the call I asked the cust. svc member IF......when I was transfered was it to an 0870# and she said yes and that I would be charged.  This is how they get around using 'saynoto0870'.   I'm afraid they are smarter than you/we are.  I am livid as I suspect most people believe when they dial the normal landline # or a free 0800# that it remains free.  All these companies do is 'let me transfer you to the correct dept'. and they do so by routing you through the 0870 or 0845......but what if they route you through an 0906# ??  I think they've got us folks.

Don't worry. You will not be charged for any numbers apart from the one you originally dialled. The phone system simply doesn't work that way.

Since you dialled 0800 you won't be charged at all, assuming you dialled from a landline. Charging for 0800 from mobiles is a different scam.

Oh no they're not (they may think they are by replying with that nonsense when asked the question, but they're not).

It may even be that the advisor actually believed what she told you.  Or it may be that the reply was how she was told to reply to such a question.  In either case, it just proves the point of the campaign against these 'disguised premium rate' numbers.

As allegro says, what you dialled (0800 xxx ) is what you will be charged for so, as 0800 is freephone, that's what you'll be charged - provided you called from a landline (mobile providers charge extortionate rates for freephone calls).

There is no way you will be charged for your call, I always ask to be transfered to customer servics, with no charge being made.
