GMTV boss set to quit over phone-in scandals

GMTV managing director Paul Corley is to resign, the station announced today, as it unveiled a package of measures designed to restore viewer confidence in its daily prize competitions.

Many viewers were charged for calls to the premium rate phone quiz lines after the quiz had closed, it had emerged earlier this year.

Appearing on GMTV in April Corley had said that he was "saddened, shocked and angry" about the series of scandals that had rockled the popular daytime TV show.

"We set up a team we thought we could trust and frankly we were let down," he said of the relationship with Opera, the comapny in charge of running the phone-in quiz lines.

"We need to go through the back systems and find out exactly who wasn't counted in the competitions.

"We will do everything in our power to make sure people get a refund and get reimbursed.

"We will not bring back our competitions until we are completely sure we have another telecoms operator that is not going to fall into this trap."

GMTV's phone-in boss steps down

The director of GMTV's phone-in competitions has resigned in the wake of the admission that its quizzes were not being conducted fairly.

Kate Fleming, who has worked at ITV1's breakfast broadcaster for 14 years, will leave on 10 August.

Her resignation came after measures were implemented last week to compensate some viewers who entered contests but had no chance of winning.

GMTV managing director Paul Corley announced he was quitting last week.

Mr Corley said: "Kate has done the honourable thing and taken responsibility, even though many of the problems we are dealing with were as a result of things that happened outside GMTV."
