Localphone Sale

The company I work for, Localphone, are having a January call sale offering half price calls to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (now 1.45p, 1.25p and 2.82p per minute respectively).

The service works similar to indirect phone providers, but instead of an 0845 access number each one of your contacts is assigned a unique local number, wherever you are in the UK. When you call that number, you go straight through to the corresponding international number without having to mess about with PINs.

Sorry if it came across spamming - I work for the company, but not in any marketing capacity. Perhaps I should have made that a bit clearer in my original disclosure.

I thought forum members might be interested in the opportunity to save a bit of cash - I certainly intend to stick around and make other contributions to the community.

Well, practically anywhere you mention "01143" on the website is wrong. It appears to be a fallback from when Sheffield had a different area code, and then became 0114 2 during the "great phone change around".

The correct format for Sheffield numbers is 0114 xxx xxxx. For example, on your contact page (http://www.localphone.com/contact) the number should be 0114 319 1919 (not 01143 191919 as it is presently listed). Also, international format is +44 114 319 1919, not +44 (0) 114 319 1919. Ideally, you should present the local number first (0114 319 1919), then say "for international callers, dial +44 114 319 1919".

I’ve had that fixed now - thanks for pointing it out. We offer numbers in every UK town, so a few formatting problems will have fallen through the cracks. Where it was hard-coded—on pages like the contact form—it was actually probably my fault :p

The only place you should still see 01143 is where we offer geographic numbers, as there it is used to indicate that all of our available numbers begin with that sequence.

Well, I guess that is OK as long as when the person gets their full number it is formatted correctly

. I know these might seem like pedantic points, but it might confuse people into dialling local numbers incorrectly (the area code for Sheffield is 0114, not 01143 - as such, typing 191919 from a Sheffield landline wouldn't work because it is missing the first digit).

Oh, something else to point out - your tariff page for the UK has an error on it! On this page, under United Kingdom Non-Geographic Call Rates you state that 0845 calls are "local" and 0870 calls are "national" - this is completely incorrect! 0845 numbers should be called either "Business rate services" or "Special Services: Lower Rate", with 0870 numbers labelled similar but as "Higher Rate".

Best to be clear on the site - thanks again for pointing out the error.

I'm in Sheffield as a student so I got a bit confused because local Sheffield numbers are all 7 digits rather than 6 like they are at home. It is likely to be even more confusing for Sheffield folk as you don't see many 0114 3xx xxxx numbers around!

You can dial local numbers without the code for all areas in the UK. Not all local numbers are 6 digits, which probably explains why you had difficulty calling the taxi firm.

All codes of the form 011x and 01x1 are four digits plus seven digit local number. Eg: 0113 2345678, 0131 2345678 etc

All codes of the form 02x are three digits plus eight digit local number. Eg: 020 81234567, 028 90123456

The vast majority of the rest (which all begin 01) are five digit codes with six digit local numbers.

There are a few six digit codes with five digit local numbers. These are all beginning 01 and are in rural areas.

The number starts 056 and you have to dial the area code even for local calls. In fact they warn you if you dial 999 the operator can not trace your call. If you dial 5 first this puts you back to your 01 number.
