Government offices, especially DVLA
Mar 3rd, 2008 at 10:29pm

There is a petition at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/DVLA0870phone/ asking the PM to stop Government offices, such as DVLA, using 0870 numbers.  There were only 89 signatures when I looked on 3 March 2008 and the petition ends on 21 March 2008 (Good Friday).

There is another one at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/NoPremiumRates/#detail asking the PM to prevent public service departments generally from using non-geographical numbers.  That had only 26 signatures on 3 March and it ends on 2 April.

They are both worth signing, so let's have more signatures please.

The DVLA makes millions from its 0870 numbers and I understand it was going to switch to 03 around now due the changes which were due to take effect on 1 February which would mean loss of revenue. Because that's now not happening, it will stay as is.

Last September Transport Minister, Jim Fitzpatrick said:
Quote:
In line with the David Varney recommendations DfT intends to migrate its major service numbers to the new 0300 number range, dedicated to the Government and not-for-profit sector, as soon as they are available later this year. This will cease any revenue share arrangements and customers will pay no more than they pay for calls to 01 or 02 numbers.
