We are supposed to use that specific line though, they wont sell them over the other sales number
I see that this number is not specifically for this match or provided by the FA. It is Portsmouth's ticket line and there is a message about the "partnership" with Ticketmaster
here. At present you can only buy tickets via the phone and in person.
It's a 5p/min at all times number from BT landlines and I believe most/all other landline providers charge the same.
If you feel strongly about it, then I suggest you email the chief executive with your views. Explain that you dislike the expensive number, of which Ticketmaster gets a cut. This is taking advantage of club supporters. Perhaps you could phrase it that you call from a mobile where it's even more expensive. A search of the Portsmouth FC reveals email addresses are of the form firstnamelastname{at}pompeyfc{dot}co{dot}uk I believe his name is Peter Storrie.
As for an alternative, I suggest you try all the Ticketmaster alternative numbers listed. They are unlikely to put you through from the club because it would probably mean forwarding your call to the 0844 number, and they are hardly likely to do that at their cost.
It may be published as an overseas alternative for people who can't call UK 0844 numbers.
If you are still after the 01/02 alternative that the 0844 number you quote directs calls to, then you will have to try loads of (what are likely to be) their numbers. Eg 0161 3853xxx That's the best I can do I'm afraid as it is unlikely to be lying around somewhere, as it were.
