T-Mobile Big Price Increases To 08 NGN Calls.
Jun 17th, 2008 at 7:45pm

They blame the price rises on Ofcom !!!!

"To make things clearer for our customers, we have aligned our 08 number charges with local and national calls to follow the latest Ofcom guidelines"

Yes, I had a text about this today, so i thought I would check the information on the link....

'To make things clearer for our customers, we have aligned our 08 number charges with local and national calls to follow the latest Ofcom guidelines. These calls aren't included as part of your allowance in any of our price plans'

Absolutely disgusting. I don't have a landline so it now costs me 20p a minute to call my GP, lovely!

The only way they could make things clearer for their customers is to include these numbers in allowances, thereby truly aligning them with their charges for local and national calls.

I emailed them asking why when Ofcom are stopping revenue sharing on these numbers they have reacted by, in some instances, quadrupling their call charges. I stated that I feel that this is blatant profiteering and because of their gesture of badwill I shall be changing my service provider when the contract ends.

I suggest anyone on T-Mobile sends them a similar email:

Cheers!

Ofcom says that if the new price increase will effect your bill by 10% or more you can ask T-Mobile to termante the contract as they have changed the conditions of the contract.

I phoned T-Mobile today and was told I would get a call back by a manger within 2 hours - that was 8 hours ago!

Perhaps someone would like to report T-Mobile to trading standards.

Those with inclusive minutes pay less "per minute" for these minutes than they do the chargeable ones outside the allowance, hence 08xx calls do cost more.

The statement "we have aligned our 08 number charges with local and national calls" is incorrect because "local" and "national" calls which come from inclusive minutes do not apply to 08xx calls. Thus the "charge" is not aligned as it claimed.

Oldharryrocks ... apologies old chap.

My eagle eye spotted the typo (I had not tried it!) and I subsequently edited the link and posted.  I will pay more attention in future.

But they're not clearer to me 'cos they don't list my tariff!

So I 'phoned their Customer Services as directed - and got someone who didn't know anything about the increases until they asked someone else!

It transpires that the notice on the cited webpage applies only to contract tariffs, not to PAYG tariffs.  On my tariff it still costs 40p per minute to 'phone an 08xx number, as compared with 15p per minute for a geo call.  How is that "aligned ... with local and national calls"?

Any unwarranted price increase is to be attacked, as is any improper reference to what Ofcom is seeking. There is however something to watch out for.

084x and 087x numbers are revenue sharing, which means that some of what is paid is passed on to the person called. I doubt that T-mobile could refuse to pay the additional termination charges that are incurred at a consequence, or would take the necessary money directly out of its profits.

If 084x and 087x calls were included in packages, where would the revenue share money come from?

We campaign for revenue sharing to be abolished, to be made more transparent and for organisations to stop using revenue sharing numbers. I am not sure that we want the costs mixed in with the charges for calling geographic and 03xx numbers, so that the price of packages would have to be increased.

T-mobile needs to show that the additional charge for calling revenue sharing numbers is related to the amount of revenue share that it has to pay. That is the transparency that Ofcom claims to be seeking.

If the package is an "unlimited" ones as is typically the case from landlines, then that would be a reasonable point.

However, two points spring to mind:

1. Mobile packages have a finite number of inclusive minutes.
2. These minutes go towards not only geographical calls, but mobile calls. Those to other networks are traditionally more expensive and if landline to mobile versus landline to 084x/087x is anything to go by, then mobile termination rates are certainly not lower than the latter numbers.
