I use an 0800
Jul 18th, 2008 at 5:14am

Hi,
I run a company and use an 0800 number for technical support and billing, not just sales.
When I see these so-called 'big' companies that have premium rate or expensive rate numbers for their support it makes me think that my company must be earning twice the profit they are, how can they not afford to help their clients and we can? Even if they have more clients than we do, they are still earning the same money per client than any other company.
I have a question, I understand that 0800 numbers tend to be more expensive for mobiles to call than local ones, which 08 number should I use as an alternative for my clients who call from mobile phones? 0870 and 71 tend to be expensive, should I use an 0845 or 0844 number? Which would you rather call on?
Thanks,
Aleron

Congratulations for using 0800 numbers for support. In the USA this would be standard, alas it isn't in the UK.

Simple answer. You shouldn't use any 08xx number for people to call from mobiles. All 08xx numbers are excessively charged from mobiles. It's not your fault.

Either use a normal 01 or 02 number. Or one of the new 03 numbers. All of these are charged at the same rate and are included in any bundled minutes.

For people on mobiles, 01 or 02 would be the best option. However, if you are wanting a number that provides the same features as an 08 number, then you should get an 03 number.

I agree with others and suggest 033x. You might be able to get one which ends in the same few digits as your 0800.

I should point out that the 0800 number is only of advantage to landline users on non-inclusive packages (where calls are chargeable at the time they call) and public payphone users.

Those on inclusive landline packages will pay nothing anyway. As has been mentioned, those calling from mobiles will, generally, pay more for 0800 than 03xx.
