moving to sky for line rental
Oct 15th, 2008 at 11:07am

hi all
what is your opinion about moving to sky for line rental? currently i am with BT for line rental and with sky talk for free evening and week end calls free of charge. since i cant use 1280, BT started charging me for 1571 and caller display. Sky offers all these services and all sky customer service numbers free.Your opinion is most appreciated.

Primus do free evening and weekend (upto 90mins last I heard per call) for free.  You can still use 1280 override and pass whatever type of call you want back to BT.

The drawback from what I see is calls to Sky on their 084/087xx will be chargable.  Each option has it advantages/disadvantages.

On Sky, if there is no geo alternative available and your stuck ringing a 0845/0870 number for a company and you cant route the call via BT then you're paying well over the odds as Sky's call charges to 0845/0870 numbers are one of the highest (along with VirginMedia) out of most, if not all, other landline providers.

How often do you ring Sky to justify losing your freedom to route calls whereas on Primus you can still have your freedom to route calls as you choose.

Do you take other services from Sky? If so, and you are satisfied with those services, and it means you get a cheap deal, it's probably worth going for it. If you are like me, you'll almost never call 0870 numbers thanks to this site, and if you make one or two a year, the savings in not having to pay for caller display, etc. will more than make up for it.

Of course, 1571 is an evil feature that no-one should have, so definitely don't pay for that.

Do you use the likes of 18185. I have read on MSE that Sky has started to block access. As the saving is only 50p a month if you take Sky Line Rental, indirect access short code users would probaly be better off staying with BT.

After years of ignoring govt. guidelines & RIPPING OFF Council Tax payers using 0845 numbers, Essex County Council changed to 0345 numbers on 2 November 2015

I thought the OP was going to stay with Sky one way or another, and it seems they now have a deal with BT that means CPS override is disabled. Will people still be able to make calls using 18185 etc. even if they still have line rental with BT? As Heinz's linked article suggests, it's best not to use Sky and to pick a CPS operator that still allows override. My advice assumed the OP had other services with Sky so was looking still to use their services. Anyone not using dial-through numbers or override may as well take Sky line rental now to avoid BT's fees for caller ID.
