I have just opened a bank account with Abbey plc and have been given the number below to call my local branch:-

Does anyone know what this area code is and what the charge is?

0551 14   charged at g21 rate.

g21 calls are charged bt BT as per 01/02/03 calls, and included in their inclusive calls schemes, e.g. 3.92p/min weekday daytime, 1.47p/min weekday evenings, 0p/min (first 60mins, then 3.92p/min) weekends for those on the Unlimited weekend plan.

g6 calls are charged at 4.894p/min at all times.

Graham1952, which telephone provider are you dialling from? If it is BT, then you will be charged the same as for a 01/02/03 call.

I have just received my BT Telephone Bill and the 0551 1430063 call is classified as 'Special Service' on the bill and for 1.24 minutes have been charged 0.140.  This is calling from my home BT 020 area code telephone.

0551 143 numbers are g21 rate so, if you don't have an all inclusive package and you were making the call on a weekday, you should have been charged 8p connection plus 2 minutes at 4.784p = 17.568p incl. VAT (15.276p before VAT).
