If this is a request for help, then perhaps you could provide all the help you can rather than leaving forum members to do spadework.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

This instructions explain that information such as a company's address, web address, business type should be given where possible.

Unless we are given to understand that you have been given this 0844 number for "Let Sense" with no idea what business they are in, why you need to call them...

A million apologies..... you know, I even work on a helpdesk and so should have known better  Embarrassed
I was in a bad mood when I was ringing them, and just wasn't thinking straight... and totally missed the instructions you so kindly make available to us.
I use your very valuable service ALL the time, so apologies again.

LetSense are people who intrude into people's backgrounds, a privelege I am paying £250 to check on myself and my partner for the purpose of them confirming we are human beings, not criminals, and don't owe thousands !!!!

I've re-opened the email they sent me with the form I had to fill out, and the contacts page is JUST 0844 numbers, hence my original question.

These are the details I have though from my own original search to try and find a normal phone number.  Immediately after that call I found another one using 0844 - is this a new code, not seen it before today???

Useful contact numbers
0844 902 9909 - Agent Services

0844 902 9901 - Customer Services - same number for their helpdesk as I discovered, but they did not want to help once I did call, they prefer dealing with agents only!!!!

0844 902 9919 - Referencing Services

Glad it worked for you. The answer to their question would be, 'because it is cheaper!'

Which is precisely what I told them.

I don't even use 0870 etc when I need to make calls from work, so certainly not going to do it when I pay for it from home line.

Such a nerve, love your website, a lifesaver on many occasion.

These are even worse when you make calls from a mobile, as even 0800 are no good  then - I noticed that smile.co.uk was a recent request - I got their alternative number from your website only a few weeks ago and saved it in my mobile ever since I switched to them for my banking, so someone else's request has already been useful.

Thanks again  Cool

Thanks for the further information; this is useful.

The 0844 numbers have been around for 10 years now. Now that the "revenue share" premium has been removed from 0870 numbers, organisations are switching to 0844 and 0871 to continue benefiting from the higher revenue from callers.

Not so fast !!

I note that the 0844 numbers are all 0844 902 99xx and that the geographical number is 01603 264500.

We know that they asked why the 01603 264500 number was called, rather than the 0844 one. Either the geographical number isn't the one underlying the 0844 one or they know which number you dialled (assuming that the 0844 number does direct to 01603 264500). I believe that in general companies don't have any notification of which 08xx number has been dialled at the point of the call, although some larger operations may have the facility.

Maybe, just maybe, the company operates subsequent geographical numbers, 01603 264501, 502 etc. Maybe (and this would require some testing) 0844 902 99xx maps to 01603 2645xx. So customer services 0844 902 9901 could be 01603 264501.

The process facilitating revenue sharing on 0870 has now been removed. Unfortunately some telephone companies such as Virgin Media and the mobile operators continue to charge above the price of geographical calls.

So if you are with BT or another provider that has reduced its 0870 rates, then you are OK to call them.

Mobile providers charging a premium for 0800 calls is a scandal. This is just the same as I described with 0870 today.

For 0870 and 0800 (in the case of mobiles), the companies receiving calls (and their telephone providers) aren't the ones who are levying premiums on us.

You can call 0800 and other freephone numbers from a mobile at your normal geographical rate using the dial through number 020 0222 0900. Wink

A check of 01603 264xxx reveals:

500 LetSense Sales team
501 LetSense Plc
502 LetSense Sales team
503 @ "is not available"
504 @ "is not available"
505 @ "is not available"
506 rings, no answer
507 @ "is not available"
508 @ "is not available"
509 LetSense Plc
510 LetSense Sales team
511 @ "is not available"
512 LetSense Sales team
513 @ "is not available"
514 @ "is not available"
515 @ "is not available"
516 Mytel Voice Processing System
517 number unobtainable
518 fax
519 fax
subsequent numbers not recognised

Those listed as @ "is not available" are answered with an answering service but the user has not recorded their name.

0844 902 9919 is answered by a fax machine, as is 01603 264519

0844 902 9909 is answered as "LetSense Plc" as is 01603 264509

However, I have not found alternatives for others:

0844 902 9903 is "LetSense Verifier Services"
0844 902 9904 is "The Referencing Team"
0844 902 9905 says "Please hold on, your call is being re-routed"
