Asda Stores' new number - 0844 894 1234
Nov 23rd, 2009 at 6:35pm

A number of Asda stores are now listed on the company's website with the number 0844 894 1234. The geographical telephone numbers for those branches now answer with recordings giving the 0844 number.

It appears that Asda is gradually bringing in a centralised number.

Of those stores I've just verified, they all have a sequence of numbers where the old main number with the redirector message ends 00. Each branch has another menu that ends 55 or 15 which can be used to access the store.

From what I can gather, according to listings on BT Phonebook, in general, stores have similar numbering where pharmacies end 10 and opticians are 12.

If Asda, like many organisations wants to resource its telephone response to customers centrally, then that is a matter between it and its customers. We no longer have local rates, so I would suggest that finding local alternatives (which staff may not have the time to answer) is not the issue, so far as our campaign is concerned.

The focus should be on persuading Asda that a 03xx number is what is needed for a central customer contact point, not a number that is subsidised by callers and causes some, notably mobile users, to incur quote excessive premium charges.

Sorry, SCV, I disagree fundamentally.   If a customer has an item from Asda which is causing a problem or over which they have a query, why should they have to pay a premium rate to contact Asda?   It is bad enough having to pay for a phone call but when that payment subsidises the organisation which has caused the customer a problem (and it is almost invariably a problem caused by the organisation that generates the need for phone contact) that is totally unacceptable in any circumstances.   The only reason I have need to call a store or, indeed, most organisations is because they have failed me as a customer in some way.   I don't want to pay them, generally I want them to compensate ME in some way!

Sorry, Barbara, I agree with you totally.

My point was in relation to the issue of whether the staff to handle such calls are deployed at the local store or at a one or more central call centres. If the latter, then a non-geographic number may be preferred.

In my view, local staff are essential for face to face contact. If telephone enquiries can be handled more effectively through a call centre, then fair enough. Often this is not the case, but that is not inevitable. I say that focus should be on the quality of service not the place from where it is delivered.

We agree totally on this inappropriate use of a revenue sharing telephone number.

I agree with you both here.

There are obviously the two separate issues of where the call is answered and whether a charge is levied directly for making contact. It's a totally innappropriate use of such a number, particularly where callers are likely to be those who have already made their purchase and have found they have been supplied with faulty goods.

I'm not sure what Asda is thinking by introducing charges for finding out the opening hours of a local store or whether it stocks a particular product.

Of course, if you're in the US, the central number for Walmart for these enquiries is a toll free number. Indeed, a call to that US number is cheaper than calling Asda Store's UK 0844 helpline.

I feel that the only way to deal with companies who use 0844, 0871 and the likes is to inform them that you are about to do business with them, but unfortunately you are unable, as your phone system can’t use premium and semi-premium revenue sharing numbers that the company uses.  And that you would be able to place business with them if they used telephone numbers starting 01, 02 or the new non-geographical numbers starting with 03.  I usually send this statement to the sales department by email.  If the sales department receive sufficient emails, they sometimes change telephone numbers.  I now find that this tack is simpler that sending companies long missives about call charges with the resultant obfuscatory replies.

Asda Stores bin 0844 number!

When I checked the list of Asda stores in November, I found that a number of them (about 10 or 15) had been changed to 0844 894 1234. They have now reverted back to their geographic numbers and the 0844 number is answered by a recording saying that it is no longer available and refers callers to sources where local telephone for branches can be found.

Asda has now replaced a number of 0844 numbers with 0800 ones:

Asda Direct 0844 824 3000 is now 0800 952 3003
Asda Home Shopping 0844 873 3333 is now 0800 952 6060
Asda Stores 0844 894 1234 was a central number for all stores and now redirects callers to Asda's website for the telephone number of their local branch.

The main free number has also changed from 0500 100055 to 0800 952 0101.

All these have recorded messages on redirecting to the new numbers.

This shows that companies can change away from 084 numbers.  Smiley
