I just got through to the Eastbourne Job Centre with the number 01323 413004, after several attempts at guessing the final digit.

Hi l have just tried to contact my JC but had to get through by using the 0845 no. as my JC/SS dept is in Wick Scotland.  After waiting to go through the blurb of answering machine l was put intouch with someone.  It took 2 min before l spoke to a person.  I complained and asked for a land line 01 no.  To be told they do not have one.  I asked to speak to a supervisor who said the same l asked to speak to the manager who is not in til next week.

When l asked again for a 01 no. told again they do not have any.  I said this is not true as before l retired l worked for an organisation who had 0845 no, and they are placed ontop of 01 no.  She informed me that if you ask whoever answers to phone you back they will.  I pointed out that to get through to a person in the 1st place can be anything up to 5 min.  but got no where.

So l phoned up my MP. His secretary said they have changed it to 0845 no.  so it would be free.  I pointed out that it is not free.  Some landline providers charge and if you are on a mobile it can cost between 25p -35p per min. Also pointed out that 0800 no from mobiles are charged.  She said she would look into it but l will not hold my breath.

Gena.

This happens a lot with the jc, but eventually you will find someone who drops their guard and gives you an 01 or 02 number.

I was in the same situation as you, so until I found an 01 number I confined all my contact with the jc to letters, (not emails). Obviously this is slower, but it also clogs up their system and makes them much more likely to give you an 01 number, (and they DO still have them).

The next time you visit your jc ask them for some pre-paid envelopes, - if they have none printed with their address they can give you unaddressed, pre paid envelopes, (Ref Nr T51SS).

I always place the following text at the end of any letter I send to the jc.

===

NON-GEOGRAPHIC PHONE NUMBERS.

Following a study of recent phone bills it has come to my attention that calls made to non-geographic numbers are proving disproportionately expensive when compared, on a like-for-like basis with calls to standard numbers. Therefore, please be aware that I will not make or return any calls which require me to use a chargeable non-geographic phone number. This includes, but is not limited to numbers starting: 09, 084 or 087

Therefore, with immediate effect, if you wish me to contact you by phone you MUST provide a geographic number, that is to say a number starting: 01 or 02. Alternatively, you are welcome to supply a ‘freephone’ number such as one starting: 0800 or 0808.

====

You do need to be persistent with this, but eventually you will get an 01 number, if only so they can stop you writing to them!

Good luck!

Thanks MacLee,  I am very persistent.  It is rediculous if you want to contact the Wick SS for anything you have to write to Inverness, which is 70 miles south of where l live for them to send it to Wick which is 70 miles north of us, hows that for being stupid.

I get free calls to them from my landline but l am not going to tell them that.  I just feel sorry for all the people who do not have landlines especialy the young people who  use mobiles and only gewt £50 per week to live on and are still expected to phone the SS/JC

I will be phoning the manager next week and writing to them.  I will also wite to my SMP and all the Mp's and SMP's that have emails as it is just copy and paste, without any stamps.  They have to reply to you.

Very clever idea, I don't think. The person who receives the letter has to pay extra for receiving a letter without a stamp, and if you are writing to your MP, that means he will be putting it on expenses, which means 'we' will end up paying for your letter. Not much thought has gone into that little wheeze. Angry

The 'old' number for Wick Jobcentre is 01955 673200. Follow my guidance to find an alternative. I suspect direct numbers for members of staff at that office will follow on: 673201...673202 etc.

I think that your idea of always adding this statement is an excellent one!! Smiley  Well done!

You could also mention that an 03 number would be acceptable, I suggest, as 03 numbers cannot be charged at a higher rate than the 01/02 numbers by regulation.

Thanks for the positive comments.

I prepared this statement before I knew about 03 numbers, and I was going to add 03 to the list, BUT they would then still only use it for their clueless call centres, and as most people want to talk to a jc, not to their contractor at the call centre, I saw no reason to assist them in diverting calls from the jc itself.

It would not be a problem if those at the call centres could ever do anything other than to take your number and promise a return call, (which often does not materialise!).

Please feel free to use what I have written and to modify it to your own needs.

I get sick of the jc trying to dictate to the people it is supposed to be serving... time for us to strike back!  Grrrr!  (Rant over... I'm fine now!!)  Smiley

Thanks for the reply from you all.  Dave did try substituting the last number without success.  But will keep trying.
Will add the message never heard of 03 numbers but will be guided by you.

Thanks also for the freephone  0800 0556688 which is free to some mobile users.  If JC/SS can do this for  First Contact New Claims why can they not do it for the other numbers!!!!!  Did try the number from my mobile taking off the 0 at the begining and it is free as l checked my balance before and after.

Also memtioned to my MP's secretary the NHS24 number.  but on the few occassions l have used NHS24 l have phoned up my GP's number which when out of hrs goes through to NHS24.  Just another tip.
