The 020 8781 9103 number was already listed for the Croydon office. What is the 0844 892 1111 number for and could the head office number (020 7917 8888) be a better alternative? This number is listed as the alternative for the "National helpline" which is  0870 908 8061, although this is now unobtainable as I expect that it has been changed to a 0844 number. 

The contact page gives 0844 892 1111, so perhaps this is the new National helpline.

I've been through the entries we have for Land Registry, removed the dead ones and added some new ones that have come to light.

The 0844 892 1111 number is answered with the following options:

1. General Land Registry Enquiries (Goes to "Customer Support")
2. Business E-Services
3. Find a Property Service
4. Account Holder (Goes to "Land Registry Telephone Services")

Ringing a local office goes through to the same message which gives out the central 0844 number and requests extension number of the party being called, or hold for the operator. As an extension number will only exist once (at one location), I therefore think it's fair to say that the local office numbers are largely redundant.

For example, if you request extension 61234 and it belongs to someone at Coventry, then dialling any office number and requesting 61234 will go through to the same person at Coventry. Incidently, I believe that extension numbers can be dialled using 0300 00 followed by five-digit extension. So in this example it will be 0300 00 61234.

The 0844 892 0456 number is answered with a recording which redirects to 0844 892 1111 option 3 (which is for Find a Property).

I found the above 0300 alternatives by digging around as a few of these 0300 006 6xxx numbers are given for contacting some offices.

For example, 0300 006 6000 is for Plymouth office. It goes to the same message which is one most of the office numbers. It asks callers to dial the extension of the party the caller requires (if known) and gives out the 0844 number for Customer Support. It then says callers can hold to speak to the switchboard operator.

Interrupting this message by pressing * reads out the extension number which is 66000. Trying a few of the other numbers we have shows a pattern where the external number is 0300 00 followed by five-digit extension number.

On the main office numbers (which answer with the recording), once the call has been answered, press *#1 and you can dial by last name. It will give out extension numbers of individuals, so you can work out what their direct dialling in numbers are.

If you get to the point where it's asking you to leave a message for the person, press * and it will give you the extension number.

Further to my previous posting, I have now matched the published "IT Service Desk" number, 0844 892 1000, with alternative 0300 006 0132. This number is now listed in the database.

I also post here, for the record, some other numbers that I've removed, but are still in service:

• 01752 640000 has the standard office switchboard message, but when * is pressed, it identifies itself as x60002, which is the same as 0300 006 0000 and 0300 006 0002.
• Other unverified numbers are 01438 788889 (Knebworth) and 0115 906 5353 (Nottingham East). Both go through to the switchboard message (which mentions the main 0844 number).
• I have also removed 0800 068 5029 which was submitted alongside the above 0115 number, and is given on LR website as being for the Bankruptcy Unit.

The 0300 006 0100 number doesn't work either now.
I've just tried it and got a recorded message saying it had been discontinued. Then the line went dead.

I have emailed customer services at Land Registry to tell them the Call Charges Q&A section on their website is incorrect in stating that 0844 numbers "cost no more to the caller" than 0300 numbers... what about callers with inclusive landline packages, bundled minute mobile tariffs and users of override providers like 1899?

I've only just (5:20pm) picked up this forum entry so it's too late for me to try the 01752 number. I'll try it Monday.

I tried extension 0114 and 0124 today - you just end up at the `dial 0844....` message.  I've given up and will be paying the megabucks for a call to Customer Services shortly.  Incidentally they explain why they use 0844 instead of 0300 on their web site - but don't say why they won't use 0845, which is a bit better for some of us.  They claim they don't make any money on the 0844 number, so hopefully it's a 1p, rather than 5p a minute charge.

Please everyone learn from my msitake.  The number you have been rin ging is for land registry services and not the official site.  I rang to make a complaint and realkised my problem.  Although both have 0844 numbers, one is kosher and one is chargin more and has no customer services!
