You and Yours 40th
Radio 4's 'You and Yours' is celebrating its 40th birthday this month with some retrospective programmes. The first was last Monday, about the telephone. Some rare and lengthy archive clips, so thought I'd point it out! Hurry though, it's only available on i-player until the next programme later today.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00v1nhd#synopsisI find it incredible that as late as the early 1970s most British households were still not 'on the phone', but most were by the end of the decade! What they didn't really make clear in the programme is that take-up of the telephone was much slower in Britain than in other Western countries, partly because of the GPO's monopoly on the service which meant that the telephones were hardwired into the wall!
(I know this isn't related to the site and doesn't really fit into any of the forum sections, but I thought it might be of interest to some and Dave will remove it if he disagrees.)
