It is quite surprising that organisations stay with 0870 numbers, even though the benefit (subsidy) users receive was stopped over a year ago. Today, it is sadly the majority of telephone call providers that profiteer on these calls. That is, they charge callers the premium even though they don't pass them on.

From what I understand, only BT (together with its subsidary PlusNet) and TalkTalk bill 0870 calls the same as 01, 02 and 03 ones.

Was it something specific you wanted to see?

I had a look on the National Gallery website and can only see 020 numbers

Is this a request for help finding an alternative? If so, it's in the wrong section of the forum - this section is for discussing use of non-geo numbers in the public sector, but not looking for alternatives.

I can move it, so post back and let me know.  Smiley

The National Gallery, like almost everyone else in the world, subcontracts its online and telephone bookings to Ticketmaster. Google shows that the number given was previously used by Ticketmaster for another event.

This may absolve the National Gallery (a QUANGO and therefore properly in this section) from any blame for choosing a 0844 number, but not entirely from responsibility for the conduct of its agent.
