Thanks to sherbert for identifying the mystery company. I have found out that Van Meuwen is part of Thompson & Morgan and I think it's fair to say that any alternatives for that will probably work for Van Meuwen and any other outlets owned by the company.

I am looking at the Thompson & Morgan entries with regard to tidying them up; removing non-working numbers and adding the 084 numbers they now use. I will post back soon with further suggestions for the OP to try.

We have a number of Thompson & Morgan Ipswich (01473) numbers. The main office switchboard is 01473 695200 and it is open Monday to Friday 8:45am to 5:15pm.

We also have 01473 695225, 695300 and 688821 which are all answered with the same message which gives the opening hours as Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and weekends 9am to 6pm (the same hours as given above).

There are a number of 01787 numbers. Those I have removed as they are now unobtainable are 01787 884141 and 884046.

The Telegraph Shop contact page gives the clue as to where these 01787 numbers go. The e-mail address ends @prolog.uk.com. Prolog is an outsourcing provider whose address is: Prolog House, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 2XG Tel: 01787 370272

The only working 01787 number we have is 01787 884264 which (now they are closed) doesn't say what company it is; it just gives the opening hours as 9am to 8pm seven days a week. When I called the 08 numbers and selected a menu option, I heard the exact same message as on this 01787 number.

Putting the post code "PE11 1ZZ" into Google reveals this page on Guardian Reader Offers. We have mentioned before how Guardian offers use 03 numbers and this is no exception. The published number on that page for Van Meuwen is 0330 333 6858 which is answered with the same message as on the above 01787 number.

The fact that when calling the published 08 and 03 numbers, the message on the 01787 number is heard suggests that calls are answered at Prolog in Sudbury, but the opening hours on Thompson & Morgan's website tie in with those quote on the Ipswich numbers which presumably go to its own offices.

So take your pick and see how it goes. It's most important you post feedback on what number(s) you try and your experience with each to assist me to list a suitable alternative.

Thank you for the info about Thompson & Morgan - I had googled many times to find a geographical number for Head Office switchboard and the number you provided is correct and at last I've made proper contact! The number is 01473 695200.

I am in discussion with the CEO's office after many failed attempts to get "customer care" satisfaction. BTW their office is operated by the company called Prolog - outsourced by T & M - no wonder they don't care that much!

Thanks for posting this feedback. I've now added this switchboard number as a secondary alternative, and 688821 as the main alternative as I believe it to be customer services and orders (open longer than switchboard - see above for those opening hours).

I left these Thompson & Morgan entries purposely blank (without alternatives) when I looked at this at the end of January, as a result of this thread being started by jethro. I was expecting that he would return the favour of finding information and alternatives by helping me build an accurate list of alternatives.

Despite coming back, he has chosen to ignore further postings, and even did not bother to tell us the name of the company in question. This is someone who wishes to take out, but doesn't wish to put back into the site.

Thank you for posting about this. I've tidied up and updated the listings for Thompson & Morgan, of which Van Meuwen is a part.

The Thompson & Morgan menu with options for Orders, Customer services and Catalogue requests is on 01473 806145 and 0161 444 7550. Both these are TalkTalk number prefixes.

The numbers 01473 688821 and 01473 695225 are answered by a recording which identifies it as Thompson & Morgan and refers the caller to 01473 806145.

The Thompson & Morgan main switchboard number is still 01473 695200.
