Jemca Toyota Enfield
Jan 14th, 2012 at 10:04am

Jemca is one of the Toyota sales and service groups in the London area . They recently opened a new centre in Enfield:

Jemca Toyota Enfield
3 Lumina Way
Great Cambridge Road
Enfield
EN1 1FS

The only phone number given out by them is 0844 539 4342.

Does anybody know, or can find out, their geographic number?

BTW- Jemca closed their Seven Sisters Road branch, it can therefore be removed from the database

I have updated the entries for Jemca dealerships as they have moved from 0845 to 0844 numbers. The company's own website gives different 0844 numbers for dealerships than Toyota's website does, so they probably have different 0844 numbers that go through to the same place but which they give in different places so that they can see where people are finding their number.

On Jemca's website on each dealership page, underneath the 0844 number, it says "Calls charged at 5p per minute from all landlines at any time". No they don't! The rate from BT is 5.105 pence per minute (was 5p per minute when VAT was 17.5%) plus a call setup fee of 13.1 pence. The rate from Virgin Media is a 13.24 connection charge plus 10.41 pence per minute. Hardly 5 pence per minute from all landlines!

From that statement, there is a link to the terms and conditions page which gives a more in-depth explanation (excuse):
Quote:
Jemca Car Group 0844 telephone numbers explained

At Jemca Car Group, as with the majority of today’s retail businesses, we keep a close watch on our marketing spend and as such we have put measures in place to track our campaigns.

The use of 0844 numbers helps us to identify the most successful marketing campaigns enabling us to channel our investment more effectively thereby helping us to save money which we can then pass on to our customers.

We realise there has been some concern about the cost of these numbers and we’d like to take this opportunity to assure you that the 0844 numbers we use are known as non-geographic numbers which cost 5p per minute from all landlines at any time. However, the cost of these calls may vary depending on your mobile provider so you should speak to them for more information or advice. Of course if you want us to call you straight back please ask the person you are speaking with and we will be more than happy to do so immediately.

Our phone numbers are NOT Premium Rate numbers which are 0870, 0871, 09 prefix 090, 091 and cost anywhere from 7.9p - £2.00 p.min depending on whether calling from a landline or mobile.

To clarify how much you will be charged for calls you can ask your service provider. Ofcom is responsible for the regulation of these numbers and their contact details are:

[Contact details of Ofcom]

There we have it. The marketing department needs to know what is getting people calling them and one of their tools are non-geographic numbers, for which customers must pay extra for. At the same time, this outfit claims that all landline callers pay 5 pence per minute whilst it is only mobiles that charge more.

However, Jemca is correct when it says that 0844 number are not Premium Rate Service numbers. They have been termed by Ofcom as Business Rate numbers and they carry a Service Charge (otherwise known as a premium in English).

We must note that Jemca decided to up the Service Charge by switching from 0845 to 0844 g6 numbers, thus increasing the Service Charge.

The Toyota website lists the phone and fax numbers as 020 8802 2336 and 020 8802 5954 respectively. These are the same ones that were used at Seven Sisters Road!

Toyota are listening to  the telecom provider and not their customers, if they monitor marketing they should know that the 03 number range will give them the same features as an 08 number without ripping off the customer in the process.

How can we educate them to this fact - I would appreciate guidance in this matter

I have not seen evidence that it is Toyota. In this case it would appear to be Jemca Motor Group.

I know that another chain, Perrys Motor Sales, used to use 0845 numbers in the same way (different numbers in different places for the same dealership) and used to claim that they were local rate. In later literature they have been giving geographic numbers on prefixes allocated to providers of numbers (i.e. not those we would expect their line to be provided by and those which we might associate with being providers of 084 numbers as well).

I spoke with Jemca Enfield. They say that their geographic number is the same as the Seven Sisters Road number used to be, 020 8802 2336, but for some unexplained reason this number doesn't work on Saturdays (when I tried it)!

It rings out now. Did you misdial?

Saying that it "doesn't work" can mean a whole range of things: ringing unanswered, busy, temporarily out of order, unobtainable, not recognised etc.

This is why I keep saying that "doesn't work" always requires further qualification!!

One person might have a different definition of "doesn't work" to another or another might try it and find it rings (like I did) and thereby assume that it "does work". It is also useful to know so that when we read this back in the future; it is not just for now.

I've just tried the alternatives we have for each Jemca Toyota dealership and they all answer immediately (without any ringing tone) with a message that identifies which branch they are. They all do, except for 8802 2336 for Enfield which rings unanswered as does the published 0844 539 4342 number. I tried a couple of the 0844 numbers for others and they went straight through to the recorded message, same as the respective geographic number. So I think that the Enfield 020 number is worth another try. Perhaps today it was diverted to Edgware Road or perhaps the lady who answered normally works at Edgware Road and forgot where she was.

Have you managed to find an inclusive calls package that includes calls to 0844 numbers then Dave?

If not I must say that your actions in calling the above 0844 numbers at your own expense seems to show quite extraordinary commitment to saving others money at your own expense.  All the more so in view of the ever increasing level of exorbitant connection fees associated with calling out of bundle numbers from a landline.

I have not found a package that includes calls to 0844 Business Rate numbers and you are quite right that the cost of very short non-inclusive calls has skyrocketted. The days of the 5 pence minimum charge, which existed under BT, are long gone.

In some cases information that is helpful to finding an alternative can be gleaned from ringing the published non-geographic numbers.

Where such information is not obtained, no alternative may be found or it might mean more work to find it.

At the end of the day, where an alternative is not available, we must accept that the choice is simply one of dialling the published 08 number or not ringing at all.
