Tariff confusion
Aug 2nd, 2012 at 5:07pm

I am in correspondence with a building society about their use of 0844 numbers which replied by quoting call rates as per the top of page 7 of this list, http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumer/assets/downloads/BT_PhoneTariff_S.... This lists local and national call rates, which I thought had been amalgamated in 2004. As far as I am concerned they should be quoting as per this link, http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumer/assets/downloads/BT_PhoneTariff_R.... They as also quoting 0844 as 2.892p but I don't know where they have found that figure. Anyway I know that is wrong as 0844 vary according to the number

So I need to go back to them but need to be sure of my facts. Can someone explain who is charged at the rates on page 7.

Any help appreciated.

BT still has different local and national call rates for its "non-discounted" tariffs, and this is as it always has been. In 2004 its principal non-discounted tariff, BT Standard, was abolished, pushing some 9 million subscribers on to the "discounted" BT Together options (now BT Calling Plans). So technically different BT rates still exist.

I have no idea where 2.892p for a 0844 number comes from. We would need to know the three digits after the 0844 prefix in order to find out the BT call rate.

The most common 0844 numbers are charged at from BT:
  • g6 5.105ppm inc VAT | 4.255ppm exc VAT
  • g11 4.084ppm inc VAT | 3.404ppm exc VAT
  • g10 3.062ppm inc VAT | 2.553ppm exc VAT

All calls incur a Call Set-up Fee of 13.10p (10.916p exc VAT) for Calling Plan and other "discounted" customers. Those not on a Calling Plan or on BT Basic pay a Call Set-up Fee of 3.10p (2.58p exc VAT).

BT's most popular residential Plan is the Unlimited Anytime Calling Plan — a fact which it announced last year — so the most common geographic call charge is zero.

Further to Dave's comprehensive explanation ...

The simple answer is: No residential customer of BT.

I have an interest in the mutual financial services movement. If you would like to share some details privately (or publicly if you are happy to do so) then I could have a word with them.

Thanks for the info. The number in question is 08444 631 xxx which is a g9 and costs 2.041p at all times. The society is the Derbyshire and they have said that they won't be using the 0844 number again on annual statements, which is good, but whether they will on something else is not clear. As regards their statement for other numbers they are using Page 7 as previously mentioned, but they should be using the residential list.
