BBC Local Radio adopt 03 numbers
Feb 26th, 2013 at 5:49pm

BBC Radio Berkshire are today announcing on air that their phone number is changing from an 0845 number to a 0345 number from next Monday !!! Smiley

I cannot find any reference to this on the BBC Radio Berkshire website.   I am wondering if this indicates a general change to 03 numbers for all BBC local radio stations?   Undecided Huh

The rates to us are broadly similar for 0345

They have centralised text to a shortcode that costs money and is not included in call plans.

As every telephone number and text is simply redirected to a landline or long text number respectively.

I was thinking that for public service organisations can we make a Freedom of Information request for numbers.

For example a request to the BBC as a whole for a list of radio stations along with their public call in/text numbers aling with the numbers they redirect to.

In addition to the FOI referred to above, a further FOI request received a response in May 2009 - see the results here

With many campaigners working on this issue and changes happening around this time, the fair telecoms campaign would be delighted to be able to publish details of the current position and assist with completion of the move away from 0845 numbers by focussing on those still using them.

If any supporter of the campaign has the time to work on this, please get in touch.

BBC Radio Berkshire will be covering the issue of 084 numbers in its news and on the breakfast show on Monday (4 March) morning. This will be focussed on the issue of GPs, but should be extended to cover BBC Berkshire, HMRC, DWP etc. A live interview is scheduled for around 7.00.

Don't forget that BBC Question Time also used to use an 0871 number for its audience line that was prominently displayed on each show but for getting on for a year or so has now switched to using an 03 number.

The people to write to at the BBC on this issue are Michael Stock (who is directly in charge of business outsourcing arrangements including their telephony deals) and the various other senior bods at the corporation with responsibility for radio.  Nearly all of them have email addressed in the firstname.lastname@bbc.co.uk format.

The best people to take this up are people who actually living in the local listening areas of the BBC radio stations concerned.
