The Big Question for all 084 number users
Apr 17th, 2013 at 3:04pm

The fair telecoms campaign
is urging all supporters and all customers, members, owners and shareholders of organisations using 0845, 0844 and 0843 numbers to ask them
The Big Question
now.

...

We understand that telephone companies need Ofcom to keep them honest, but believe that Government Departments, Businesses and Charities should be able to tell the truth for themselves, now that we all know what it is.

Ofcom has decided that the Service Charge component of the cost of calls to all 084 numbers will be retained. This represents between 2p and 7p per minute.

When all of the other issues surrounding the “Unbundled Tariff” have been resolved, a regulatory requirement for users to declare their Service Charge will come into effect. We ask “Why wait?”.

Download the one-page briefing document in PDF here. We will publish answers that are given.

We understand that reference to the topic of The Big Question will be included in the financial news slot of BBC Breakfast tomorrow morning (Thursday 18 April) at 0640 and again at 0820. (Times are approximate)

The second piece will apparently include reading out messages sent in response to the first. Early risers may wish to take advantage of this opportunity to make a point on air.

Please could 087 be added to the pdf - so the Big Question could refer more easily to all users of 084 and 087 numbers?

Users of 087 (and 09) numbers are already subject to a vague and weak call cost declaration requirement, so the question is not so Big for them. Some 084 users may not properly understand that they do levy a Service Charge, so the question will be very big for them.

The relevance to 087 users is an issue which will be taken into account when "The Big Question" is properly launched.
