Unwanted calls
Aug 6th, 2013 at 8:23pm

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but can someone please help.
Over the past few months we have been inundated with lots, (10+ per day) of withheld sales calls or international numbers ringing 2ce and hanging up.  (We are on TPS and have checked it is valid)
Have purchased a BT 6500 phone, but this is only solving part of the problem, the phone does not ring, but still goes to answering machine if we are out.
I would realy like a system that would anounce to the caller of these types of call, "your number is not acceptable to us, please redial displaying a valid UK number" or similar.
Does this exist?
Thanks
Gordon

Yes it does exist and its called "TrueCall".

Available from Amazon and other outlets.

I have had one for three years or so and it works.    However, if you have extensions in your house it can cause them to make funny but slight noises when a call is coming in.    It looks a simple device but actually is bristling with functions and facilities.   You can record calls and store them on your PC, you can zap certain numbers, allow friends numbers straight through, record your own welcome messages, it is an answerphone and much more.   It contains some great rejection message or you can use your own.

Ours came with 4 instruction books, so be prepared to spend some time reading and learning.   It retails for about £100 though I have seen it cheaper, about £85 in some places.

It was presented in Dragons Den years ago and all the dragons bid for it with Peter Jones winning.

Hi Bigjohn

It does not seem to offer a voice option.
All I want to do is to block International and Withheld numbers, with a message played saying so.  (my phone is not to ring)
All other calls do not bother me, and I can deal with seperately if I don't want them.
The phone I currently have only cuts off the ringer, and also if the answering machine is on, allows them to leave a message, not what I am looking for.

We all decide which calls we answer in person, by machine or not at all. The CLI can help inform that decision, whether it is made in person or by a machine.

Obviously we never be totally sure which calls will, or will not, be a nuisance (except perhaps where a particular number is recognised), but the CLI can help inform the decision about what to do.

My advice is as follows:

Before adopting a standard treatment for calls with any particular generic CLI (e.g. Withheld, Unknown, International) or for all unrecognised numbers, do please be sure that you understand the consequences. There can be no guarantee that all such calls will or will not be nuisance calls. There could be a danger of missing wanted, or even very important, calls.

If you accept all calls with CLI provided, be aware that this will include nuisance calls made with a false or useless presentation number. Devices that block calls from withheld numbers simply encourage nuisance callers to provide worthless presentation numbers. I understand that BT is planning to cease its suppression of CLI from overseas sources.

Measures taken by individuals can help, but I am campaigning to get the problem of nuisance calls resolved nearer the source.

If the call is that important then the caller will leave a message on the answer phone or the 1571 facility.

I do not answer any calls that display, 'withheld', 'unavailable', 08 numbers or indeed any number that I do not recognise.

As I say they will leave a message if they want me, after all I could be out at the time of the call.

Hi All
What is annoying me is a hugh increase in International and withheld numbers who ring 2 - 4 rings and hang up, before the ans. m/c can kick in.
I can handle sales calls without a problem, and have found with TPS, these are not too many now anyway.  The ones who do, seem to respect TPS and remove me from their lists!

It's the jumping up from the kids breakfast, lunch, bathtime etc. that is getting to me!
These calls seem to be at 08:00 till 09:30, 12:00 till 13:30 and anytime from 18:30 till 21:00

Hi Gordon and welcome, my advise is use the telephone for your convenience and not the conveniece of others. In other words never rush to answer a phone and if via caller display you do not recognize the number or is starts 0845 0844 0871 0870 the chances are it is a sales call.
