Why 0871 ?

"This is not a premium rate number it is national rate, the reason for a 0871 number is so we can digitally record and store conversations you have with our staff so if you have a customer service issue, i.e. you have received the wrong item we can replay the telephone conversation and confirm this on your behalf. "

But it is a lie not an excuse!
From Payphone plus site, http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/About-PhonepayPlus.aspx ,: - "Premium rate numbers generally begin with 09, 118, 0871, 0872 and 0873."

However they do offer a call back service plus an 0800 number.

Reply #2 - Aug 23^rd, 2013 at 5:57pm I am fully aware that 0871 is a premium rate that's why I highlighted that part of text. The excuse I hadn't heard was the bit about the need to use 0871 so they could record calls. Given that you can record calls on any number if you so desire.

The explanation is likely to be:

"We were sold the number as being a national rate call, with no monthly fees for us, and we were told we could earn 6p/min on incoming calls."

It takes mere seconds on Google to find dozens of companies offering 0871 numbers on this basis. Very few mention actual costs from landline networks other than BT. Less still mention call costs from mobiles. A number of those companies also fail to mention anything about PhonepayPlus regulation.
