This change puts the price of calls for 084 and 087 numbers from Sky almost up to the levels charged by Virgin Media. Previously, Sky has copied BT pricing thereby making almost zero profit on call origination for 084 and 087 numbers.
With several other landline phone companies recently making similar price changes, it seems they may be positioning their 084 and 087 prices for the transition to the "unbundled tariff" system. Under the new system, a "g6" call that's currently "5.1p/min plus 15p connection fee" with BT will likely become "7p/min Service Charge plus provider's Access Charge" under the new system. At the same time as introducing the Access Charge, Ofcom will be scrapping connection fees on 084, 087 and 09 calls.
In charging "7.64p/min plus 15p connection fee" now, Sky are maybe leaving their options open for when that call becomes "7p/min Service Charge plus provider's Access Charge". Presumably they'll convert the 0.64p/min excess and 15p connection fee per call into a small pence-per-minute rate Access Charge and claim that as a price reduction.
