The Phone Co-op

http://www.thephone.coop/home/phone-only/#/call_tariffs

This is interesting (to me at least).

The "Caller Plus" tariff has a lower rate for calling local 01 and 02 numbers compared to that for calling national 01 and 02 numbers. It's a while since I have seen a tariff with distinct local and national rates. I don't know if "local" means "same and immediately adjacent area codes" as used by BT long ago, or is restricted to just "same area code".

Additionally, calls to 03 numbers are charged at the same rate as calling local 01 and 02 numbers. On this tariff, and where a distant company has both an 01 or 02 and an 03 number advertised, it is cheaper to call the 03 number than the 01 or 02 number!

03 is cheaper than 0870 at all times.
03 is cheaper than 0845 in the day and the same price as 0845 during evenings and weekends.

0870 is charged at the same rate as a national 01 or 02 call at all times.
0845 is more expensive than 0870 during the day.
0870 is more expensive than 0845 during evenings and weekends.

0845 is the most expensive during the day.
0870 is the most expensive during evenings and weekends.
03 is always the cheapest.

Calls to 0843, 0844, 0871, 0872, 0873 numbers look to be a couple of pence more expensive than BT's capped rates across the board, and a few pence cheaper than Virgin Media prices.

The Caller Plus offering from The Co-operative Phone & Broadband is interesting and I wonder how it compares to BT Basic in particular.

There is no monthly charge (line rental) a line rental of £10 per month paid annually or £12.50 paid monthly, per-second billing and a 1.2 pence minimum charge.

Call rates are as follows:

Call type Daytime Evening Weekend
Local and 03 2.55ppm 1.02ppm 1.02ppm
National and 0870 3.06ppm 2.52ppm 1.51ppm
Mobile 13.8ppm 10.2ppm 6.6ppm
0845 4.02ppm 1.02ppm 1.02ppm

Contrast this with BT Basic whose line rental is £4.95 a month (£14.85 a quarter including a £4.50 call allowance). UK landline calls 11p per minute with a call set up fee of 3.2p.

So calls are more expensive with BT Basic, plus there is a standing charge which there isn't with Co-operative Phone & Broadband.

BT Basic customers can have ADSL broadband. BT Total Broadband Option 1 has a 10GB download limit for £18.85 per month, so the total cost is £23.80 (including £1.50 worth of call time).

Co-operative Phone & Broadband offers the Caller Plus tariff with broadband. The monthly charge is £21.95 and it offers up to 40GB of data download.

Edited:
Edited as I've since discovered that subscribers on the Caller Plus tariff do indeed have to pay a monthly line rental charge.

I am not sure that line rental is provided free of charge. It simply says that there is No Monthly Charge for the Call Tariff.

Its only the Caller Plus Tariff that incurs no charge. You still pay for the line rental.

On further reflection this would appear to be the case.

The page in question has two panes (boxes), each with a title, a "from" cost, a list of benefits and an "Order" button. The one on the left is for "Line Rental" and is "from £10 per month". The one on the right is for "Calls and extras" which are "From £0.00 per month".

The other two tabs, Phone & Broadband and Mobile have two boxes which are exclusive-or (i.e. one or the other).

The same format is used for the Phone only tab when in fact "line rental" on its own comes with the afformentioned Caller Plus tariff, but this isn't mentioned in the line rental pane but is mentioned in the other one.

I've edited the above posting to this effect.

BT Basic is still cheaper than Co-operative Caller Plus when taking into account monthly charges only. However, for those who want broadband, the Co-operative offering with broadband and Caller Plus tariff is cheaper than the cost of BT Basic plus BT's most basic broadband option.

Hi Dave. How is Phone Coop Cheaper ?

Phone Coop Cheapest Phone and Broadband deal is £21.95 a month.
http://www.thephone.coop/home/phone-broadband/#/price_comparison

BT Basic Line Rental is £4.95 a month
http://www.bt.com/includingyou/other-products-services-bt-basic.html?s_cid=con_F...

BT Cheapest Broadband is apparently £10 a month

http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do;JSESSIONI...

£4.95 + £10= £14.95 a month.

This can be beaten by the Talk Talk  Simply Broadband* package if you have the money to pay up front..

You get unlimited download broadband with speeds of up to 16Mb for £2.50/mth.
You must take TalkTalk line rental. It's usually £15.40/mth but  in the sign-up process you can opt to pay £126 for a year upfront, equivalent to £10.50/mth.
Assuming you pay the line rental upfront, the total package is £156 over the 12-month contract, equivalent to £13/mth.

Also you don't have to take your broadband from BT.You can use another supplier with BT Basic

From recollection if you take BT Basic you are not allowed broadband from anyone, unless they have changed the rules.

If you just want a landline phone service nothing else, Phone Coop,s prices are very good.

Line Rental. £12.50 monthly. Inclusive 01/02/03/0845/0870 calls £4.95 a month. So £17.45 a month for both.

Compare this to BT who want £15.45 line rental monthly plus £7 a month for inclusive calls.£22.45 a month for both.

Plus Uk Customer Service Centre, and 90 day contract if you transfer to them

Line rental  equivalent of £10 a month if you pay up front with Line Rental Saver.( But minimum term of 12 months applies.)
