For many years, their line was that
"Calls to the 0844 number cost 1p per minute from a BT landline. This is considerably cheaper than calling an 01, 02 or 03 number."
This ignored the call cost when calling from elsewhere, especially from mobiles, or those on a deal with inclusive calls to 01, 02 and 03 numbers. It also ignored the fact that non-inclusive calls made from a BT landline were, at the time, subject to a special price cap such that almost all of the call cost is passed on and paid to the benefit of the called party and their telecoms provider. As such, the call price used as the main example was the most un-typical of all the costs that could have been chosen.
It is likely they were misled by their telecoms supplier as to the true nature of costs incurred by callers. Separation of call costs into Access Charge and Service Charge has revealed the truth.
