Hefty Voicemail Charges If Travelling Outside EU.
Jan 10th, 2015 at 5:30am

EE, Orange, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Tesco Mobile customers travelling outside the European Economic Area (EEA) are being charged when someone leaves them a voicemail even if they choose not to listen to it.

Apart from 'celebrities' (none of whom appear to know how to change the default password), who still uses voicemail?  That's the first thing I turn off.

After years of ignoring govt. guidelines & RIPPING OFF Council Tax payers using 0845 numbers, Essex County Council changed to 0345 numbers on 2 November 2015

Almost everyone, as far as I know.

-1 from me. I regard "voicemail" on mobiles as a scam. It just means I pay for a pointless minute. I cannot know whether the person I am calling (a) might, sometime, listen to a message if I leave one;  or (b) is one of the too many of my relatives who do not know how to listen to any message that any fool leaves, or how to turn the blasted thing off.

Too right! Voicemail should be off by default.

It should be used "responsibly", meaning that it's used to take calls when one is unavailable, or doesn't have a network connection and that the messages are listened to and acted on.

That's strange, I am on Orange pay-monthly and I never get charged for incoming voicemail when roaming outside EEA. Could it be applicable only to more recent price plans?

On looking into the mystery I mentioned above, it appears that the MSE article (OP's link above) is inaccurate regarding Orange pay-monthly subscribers, for whom there are no charges for incoming voicemail when roaming anywhere. Also they can call Orange customer services on +447973100150 free of charge from anywhere in the world (with possible exceptions), contrary to the article's info. See:

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?p=67420069

So in this respect Orange still operates differently to EE and T-Mobile, an advantage for business travellers.
